Kathy lost her father from a heart attack when she was 17, and lost her mother in a plane crash. The tragedy in her life lead her to start running and doing aerobics. In college, she studied dance kinesiology, exercise physiology and nutrition. She went through a program at UCLA and became certified with IDEA and AFA as a fitness trainer. She also attended the University of Hawaii.

The fund, which is administered by the Women’s Sports Foundation, provides grants, internships, and scholarships to young girls for athletic programs, as Kathy has also been a pivotal leader in prompting sports and fitness to America’s youth.
